Here is a list of things we purchased to make a 6'x8' wall:
ceiling tiles 2'x4' (we cut them in half to make 2'x2')
duct tape
nails
9 yards of flannel
You will also need a level and a hammer.
*cut flannel 27'x27'
*lay tile on top of flannel. I turned the tile upside down because I wanted the back side for my wall. Less holes.
*tape each side taut.
*fold corners in and tape.
*finish same process with remaining tiles.
*make sure your first tile is level. You don't want a crooked design wall do you?
*hammer a nail in each corner.
*continue the bottom row using the level as you go.
Stand back and admire your work!!
Now you can see what I have been working on. On the left I put together Pretty in Pink from Livin' Large by Heather Mulder Peterson. I used a Oh Cherry Oh layer cake. On the right I started my In the Leafy Treetops by Nanette Merrill. Most of the fabrics are from Nanette's fabulous collection.
Before I go, Kim over at bitty bits & pieces is having a giveaway. Go check it out!

Luckily I have a design wall but I like how you made smaller "tiles" and put them together. I think it makes art on your hall wall with your beautiful quilting projects.
Hi Dawn,
I just got back from Long Beach. Love your design wall. And it looks perfect with Nanette's In the Leafy Tree Tops. (still on my to do list).
See you on Tuesday!
What a GREAT idea for a design wall. I'm lacking in wall space too and always thought about using the hallway. But I've been moving things around in my craft room and I carved out some wall space. Yeah!
Great design wall! Very large!
Fun projects with wonderful fabrics!
WOW! That is so neat!! I wish I had somewhere for something like that!
Love the idea... hmmm.. this could work at an odd shaped place I ve got!!! :o))
LOve designwalls... so happy with my new one!!!:o)
What a great idea! Love your projects, too...they're both on my to do list!
very nice design wall - and I think your company would to see it!
what a great idea.....and you hardly see it is there when nothing is on it........
Very good tutorial Dawn!! Thanks for the inspiration!
I need one!
love, kelee
Well, yes I am jealous!!! I keep going in to my "Red Bedroom" and thinking about how I can re-make it in to a sewing room. Now I just have to work on Paul...Congrats!!!
Very smart. and I like what I see on your handy dandy design wall.
Aw that makes me so happy to see my little birdies on your design wall. what a great idea. Necessity is the mother of invention. It is almost like having a changing picture hanging wall.
Fantastic idea Dawn! It looks great!

Cathie
Looks like the perfect use for a hallway - that way you can change the textile art regularly. Thanks for sharing your technique.
Oh, I have been wanting to have a design wall! I love the quilt on the left, so pretty!
wow--it looks great! somehow i don't think i can convince my husband to put one up in our hallway :-) i work off our dining room table so space is even more limited! can't wait 'til the kids go to college (only 14 more years :-)
This is a unique design wall! I'm in a quandry myself wondering where I can find room for one. This is a great idea.
This is a great idea! I must get one myself! Thanks for sharing.
Great idea Dawn...I love to see the quilts in progress hanging, don't you? It gives me motivation to finish them!

This is a great tutorial! If I had the wall space, i would do it. However, I live in a wee cottage, so I have one of those portable ones that you can fold away after you don't need to use ti. I wish that I could do that.
I agree with you, Nedra is a sweetheart. Love the work on your wall...just beautiful!

Oh I love that idea! But my house doesn't have any hallways! :0/
Great idea and tutorial! I really enjoyed spending a bit of time browsing your blog. Very inspirational. Thank you.
Terrific idea on making smaller tiles and using them to make a larger design wall! Absolutely brilliant! While it won't really work for me, this is something I would absolutely do if my space were different.
Good job by you and your husband!
